Frequently Asked Questions
What is the area being redeveloped?
The area under consideration comprises approximately 40 acres of land and 30 acres of water. It is bordered by the USS Midway Museum and Harbor Drive to the north, Manchester Grand Hyatt and Kettner Boulevard to the east, and San Diego Bay to the south and west. The site also would include Embarcadero Marina Park North, Ruocco Park and Tuna Harbor. The Headquarters and The Fish Market Restaurant are within the boundary but excluded from the plan due to long-term leases on those properties.
when will the project be built?
The project hopes to break ground as soon as 2024.
What is the current status?
An updated project description for Seaport San Diego was submitted in mid-2019 to the Port of San Diego, with the goal of beginning the development entitlement process later this year. This includes the preparation of an Environmental Impact Report (EIR), review by the Port of San Diego and the California Coastal Commission, and the issuance of a Coastal Development Permit.
What is the total height and size of the tower?
The number of stories is 35, but they are not standard stories; it will be a maximum of 500 feet. The Tower totals 342,709 square feet, which includes activated floors of attractions in the top half with a hotel and retail food hall in the lower half.
How will the project support sustainability?
Zero net energy and resiliency will be part of Seaport San Diego’s DNA. Seaport San Diego’s design will consciously reduce the project’s carbon footprint, and in addition to wetlands restoration, Seaport San Diego’s architecture will follow Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) design guidelines. It will plan for expected sea-level rise, utilize the latest generation of solar power with cogeneration technologies, and enlist a centralized heating and cooling system that will repurpose ocean water.
Seaport San Diego strives to be a supportive and active member of the community by supporting the Green Port Initiative, Green Business Network, and San Diego’s Net Zero Goal. The project is committed to reducing energy use through passive design strategies, combined with the use of high efficiency lighting and HVAC strategies with the goal of achieving net zero capable solutions where economically feasible.
